Evening Classes

CYCL operates evening classes on a 12 week cycle. Our Fall 2011 session begins the week of September 19th, ending the week of December 12th.

Enrolled students attend one class per week, but if they attend a class that is offered on both Wednesday or Friday, they can come to either one each week without giving us notice.

  • Introduction to Chess is offered on Wednesdays, 4:30-5:30pm
  • Strategies is offered on Wednesdays, 5:30-6:30pm and Fridays, 5-6pm
  • Advanced is offered Wednesdays, 6:45-8pm and Fridays, 6-7:15pm
  • Elite Training is offered Fridays, 7:30-9pm.

Descriptions of Evening Classes

Introduction to Chess
For players who have never had any formal instruction. Especially effective for younger players, ages 4-7.
Topics covered: Piece movements, Castling, Pawn Promotion, En Passant, Basic Checkmates, Escaping Check, Draws. (Register online.)

Strategies
For players who have a good understanding of the basics of the game and have already played 50+ games on their own.
Topics covered: Basic opening concepts and traps, chess notation, basic tactics (forks, pins, skewers and discoveries), two-move checkmates, endgame basics. (Register online.)

Advanced
For experienced players who have competed in USCF events and are serious about improving.
Topics covered: Opening plans and traps, middlegame strategies, pawn play, advanced endgame techniques, efficient calculation, combining tactical concepts, advanced checkmate patterns, and much more. (Register online.)

Elite
Mostly Junior High and High School students, this class is by invitation only. (Register online.)
