Cost: $79 per 6-week session (players who join mid-session are pro-rated at $14/week).
CYCL’s evening classes are offered for students who do not have a
chess program at their school, and for students who want to learn in a class
setting that allows more focused attention than the level we can offer at the
schools. While a school program may have 30-50 students of differing levels
rotating through the learning center, CYCL’s evening classes offer small
group (3-12 students) instruction that is at specified levels. We have four
levels of classes:
For players who are new to the game, or are unsure of all the basic rules
and objectives.
Beginning Strategies (Wednesdays 5:30-6:30pm or Fridays 5-6pm)
Encompasses students who have learned the game, but need guidance in the
area of strategy and tactics. These students work on the basic ideas in
openings, middlegames, and endgames, including (but not limited to)
development, piece placement in the middlegame, basic pawn play, keys to strong
endgames, basic endgame mates, common checkmate patterns, tactical concepts
such as pins, forks, skewers, and discoveries, and defensive thinking.
Intermediate Instruction (Wednesdays 6:45-8pm, or Fridays 6-7:15pm)
This group is proficient in finding checkmates and basic tactics. They
understand the main objectives and strategies of the three stages of a game,
and how to employ them. This class consists mainly of games review and pattern
recognition. Common opening traps and basic endgame tricks are also reviewed
continually.
Advanced Instruction (Fridays 7:30-9pm)
This group is tournament savvy, typically having played in rated events at
the state, regional, and national levels. Instruction covers intricacies of the
endgame, details of opening traps, calculating methods, and practical
tournament advice such as clock management, chess psychology, and much more.
