Side Events

Side events are separate from the main chess tournament. They are scheduled so that players in the main tournament can also play in the side events. Players can also participate in both side events. $15 entry fee if you register before 2/20/15. $20 at site by 6:40pm.

***Free Entry**** for one side event (Blitz or Bug) entry for each room night at the Hyatt over weekend.

Bughouse Tournament

Friday 3/6/15, 7pm to 9pm

What is Bughouse?

Bughouse is a fun side event which is separate from the main event. It follows different rules under the USCF. Bughouse also know as team chess. Two players sit at boards side by side. One is white, one is black. The one playing white captures black pieces and passes them to their partner who, on his/her turn can “drop” that piece on any empty square! Sound crazy? It is! All tournament bughouse games are played with 5 minutes on each clock. As in Blitz, kings can be captured.

Blitz Tournament

How do you play blitz?

Blitz is a fun side event which is separate from the main event. It follows different rules under the USCF. Players each have only 5 minutes to play all of their moves. The main difference between regular chess and Blitz is that an illegal move can be grounds to lose a game. And, if a player leaves their king in check in Blitz, it can be captured. Blitz is Touch-move!
