CYCL Students Earn Cash at LA-Area Tournaments!
During 2012, a handful of CYCL students participated in open (non-scholastic) events in and around LA for opportunities to earn more than trophies! Besides experience against seasoned players from age 7 to 77, these young Santa Clarita area players picked up a little pocket money. Alex Mosser, Tommy Hart, and Daniel Wong picked up a few hundred dollars each at various events!
4-Digit Club
Currently, CYCL has over 700 students in our afterschool and evening class programs. Of those students, 13 have USCF ratings over 1000. Our 2012 additions were Simren Lakhotia, Ray Truter, and Andrew Sung.
CYCL’s After School Chess Programs
In the Fall of 2012, over 700 youths enrolled in CYCL’s afterschool chess programs! School teams ranged in size from only 8 children to 98! “Enrollment was up in almost every school,” said a somewhat surprised Jay Stallings, CYCL’s founder and director. We think that there are three main reasons for improved enrollment: 1) Our instructors have been working hard to engage the students and this encourages the students to want to re-enroll; 2) Parents are becoming more educated on the benefits of playing chess so they are eager to get them involved; and, 3) CYCL’s new website does an excellent job of highlighting our programs and gives people easy access to information about everything that we have to offer.
Whatever the reason – we’re glad that you’ve decided to keep your child involved in chess! Thank you!
